The play starts of by describing Brenda's childhood. She talks about her Aunti Mary, the Queen of the westside. She also introduces her boyfriend her who holds the westside very highly. This scene takes place when Brenda is 13 in 1966. She works for her dad and meets her future boyfriend, who is introduced by Aunti Mary.

The intrusion occurs when Brenda attends high school. First off, she is separated out into the gifted portion of her school. This makes her be around completely new people who aren't from the westside and this makes her branch out more.

The ocean on the other hand is the opposite. It shows her desire to be free from the issues that the westside brings her.
